'For some people, simply travelling to or within Africa is all the adventure they need, but for most of us, there comes a time when you simply have to turn off the engine or get out of the game-viewer, stretch your legs and do something a bit different (even if it is just a feeble attempt to mitigate the effects of holiday indulgences). And when that happens, southern Africa, with its predisposition to the Great Outdoors and Things to Do There, is one of the best places to be.’

Hiking

One of the most obvious ways to explore and experience a new environment is to get up, get out and start walking. Southern Africa’s varied landscapes are crisscrossed with hiking trails, some challenging, others little more than a rewarding stroll. Inveterate hiker Jeremy Jowell puts together his all-time favourites.

River rafting

Self-confessed queen of the unextreme, Sarah Borchert takes to the roaring white waters of the Zambezi River in an inflatable raft.

Snorkelling

Though often eclipsed by scuba diving, the humble mask and snorkel remain a surprisingly good way of experiencing life beneath the ocean's surface. Andrew Woodburn revisits the joys of snorkelling.

Mountain biking

Mountain biking used to be the preserve of an adrenalin-obsessed few who leapt higher, went faster ... and fell harder. But now, says self-confessed biking nut, Dominique le Roux, there's a new craze in town - and it's all about scenery and socialising.

Diving

South Africa is best known for its safaris and land-based protected areas, but there is an equally fascinating world in its seas, with a mind-boggling array of fish and marine life. Fiona McIntosh, who has dived almost everywhere along this coast, takes us to her favourite sites.

Horseriding

Exploring a landscape on horseback has many advantages, provided you and your horse speak the same language. Jennifer Stern recalls some special relationships, and some equally special trails.

Elephant-back safaris

Sharon van Wyk makes stately progress through the bush on the back of an elephant and comes away convinced that, properly done, there is a place for this way of getting up close and personal with wildlife.
