The Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary began when the Government of Mozambique, and a private business entity, agreed to develop an area of the San Sebastian Peninsula and surrounding coastline as a low-density tourism venture. The agreement to develop 30 000 hectares of pristine land and sea through a private concession was the first to be issue by the Mozambican Government and provides a unique haven for indigenous marine life, fauna and flora. In addition to conserving this pristine area, the eco-tourism project aims to improve the social and economic sustainability of the Kawene community through job creation, schooling, primary health and small-business development. To date, the project has assisted with the building of a primary health care clinic and three schools.
The Sanctuary aids in funding and promoting conservation to protect the extensive diversity the Peninsula has to offer.

The diverse and natural resources of The Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary range from scattered wetlands, freshwater lakes, trees and scrub forest on coastal dunes, woodland, rich mangrove swamps and estuaries, which are home to the greater flamingo. The area is a birder’s delight, and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean offer a dazzling array of fish, five species of marine turtles and the endangered Dugong – one of the rarest sea-dwelling mammals. For the more energetic, Dugong Beach Lodge offers snorkeling, salt-water fly-fishing, nature walks, birding, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, excursions to the World’s View – the highest point on the peninsula and picnics on Bangwe Island, just a short boat ride away.
