Tuningi Safari Lodge is an elegant, five star lodge set in a tranquil valley in the magnificent Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West Province. This 75 000 hectare reserve has a unique story behind it since only fifteen years ago it was arid, cattle grazing land. Through the collective effort of government, communities and investors, Operation Phoenix was undertaken and game was reintroduced into the area and Madikwe was created. The reserve is now home to the Big Five and is renowned for the success of the Wild Dog population. What makes this beautiful area even more attractive is the fact that it is malaria-free and is approximately three and a half hours drive from Johannesburg and a mere hour’s flight.
Tuningi Safari Lodge combines the wonders of the African bushveld with the splendors of five star luxuries. The main entertainment and reception area of the lodge overlooks a waterhole that provides fantastic game viewing from the safety of an expansive wooden deck. The rim flow pool and gorgeous lounges give the lodge a sumptuous and welcoming feel. Tuningi gets its name from an ancient, sprawling fig tree under which the boma is set; perfect for wonderful traditional dinners under the African sky. The daily game drives; with informed and professional game rangers are an exciting way of getting into the bush and experiencing all that it has to offer.
Tuningi accommodates 16 people in elegant free standing rooms that all have enormous bathrooms, outside showers, fireplaces and fabulous wooden decks. The rooms are set apart from each other to provide ultimate privacy and peace. This lovely lodge is specifically designed for families and caters for children of all ages. The family units consist of two double bedrooms with an adjoining living and dining area. The entire lodge has a Colonial African feel and is stylish and comfortable.
Activities include morning and afternoon/evening game-drives in open game-viewing vehicles, bush sundowners and drink stops in the Reserve, and visits to hides. (Regrettably, due to safety concerns, children under 6 years of age are unable to participate in game-drives).
Tuningi welcomes children of all ages and by doing so, avails them to the wonders of nature, wildlife and our delicate eco-system. Children also get to go on their own game drive after breakfast to one of the waterholes with the Ranger. Before heading off on their drive, the kids will be issued with a work book (those old enough), where they can tick off the things they’ve seen (dung, animals, spoor and trees). The one with the most ticks gets a surprise on arrival back to camp. This way, kids are also included in activities and Mom and Dad can have a restful weekend without worrying about the kids
